ST. BENEDICT OF NORCIA

The second column on the right has a fresco of St. Benedict of Norcia as he is usually represented, white haired, bearded, bearing a cross and crozier and holding The Holy Rule in his hand. This picture of the founder of the Order was probably painted by a follower of Benedetto Bonfigli, an important artist in the Perugia of the 1450s. This artist carried out much work over a long period in the Church of San Pietro. On May 7th, 1445, for example, he committed to painting a Madonna with two Angels in a chapel adjoining the church; in 1467 he received payment for executing colored figures on glass in a sacristy window; and in 1488 various payments were made by the monastery for unspecified work.
