The Church of San Pietro is a genuine treasure trove of the works of Sassoferrato. The artist painted numerous copies of famous works by Perugino and Raphael, as well as works of his own invention. The small canvas of Saint Maurus is a copy of a predella panel of the large polyptych by Pietro Perugino (1495-1500), which was taken apart following 1591 due to renovation work on the Church. The painting, currently placed above the door of the right aisle leading toward the monastery, was originally in the abbot’s apartment. A document for the purchase of the canvas of Saint Maurus, dating from June 1649, offers a terminus ante quem for its execution.
